Sasha Yazov - Tumblr Girl
Sasha Yazov's project is dedicated to Tumblr aesthetics, the "saved" phenomenon and other forms of image aggregation on the web.
The phenomenon of saved pictures appeared on Vkontakte (russian analogue of Facebook) in September 2011. This year, the social network added the function of saving favorite images to a separate folder - "Saved Photos", which other users could view. The ability to aggregate content in this way has formed a new Internet subculture. The selected images were often associated with teenage romance and aestheticization of the elements of everyday life, and could also serve as a means of expressing the individuality of users and identifying “their own”.
In parallel with this, in 2011-2016, a similar logic for searching and saving visual content on the network worked on another platform - Tumblr, where its own aesthetic code was formed, more related to teenage fashion.
Looking back in the recent past, we can say that this phenomenon was really massive, millions of users saved pictures, made moodboards and joined thematic groups. Saved Money has formed a new form of modern culture - the Internet subculture, which is still developing, but in other aesthetic narratives.
The reformatting of this phenomenon made it possible at the moment to look at it from a distance or even reflect on this cultural phenomenon through the prism of nostalgia, which Sasha Yazov does in his works. The author invites the viewer to watch the images changing on two screens. This video work is a compilation of four hundred pictures found on the web. Rejecting the postmodern approach, characteristic, in particular, of Richard Prince, Sasha appropriates not specific images, but the very logic of social networks with their continuous borrowing of other people's photographs.
